Top Ten Tuesday #2

This week I will be talking about the ten books on my Good Read TBR shelve that I don't own. I don't know if I will purchase most of them but there are four that I will because they are about Laura Ingalls Wilder. As you will probably notice there are a lot of history/non fiction books on this list. I enjoy learning history and reading about it. I hope you find something you would like to read. Let me know what you think about this list and if you find something you would like maybe we could do a buddy read. Here are the books in order of oldest to newest.

 1. On the list April 25, 2015
Although generations of readers of the Little House books are familiar with Laura Ingalls Wilder’s early life up through her first years of marriage to Almanzo Wilder, few know about her adult years. Going beyond previous studies, Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder focuses upon Wilder’s years in Missouri from 1894 to 1957. Utilizing her unpublished autobiography, letters, newspaper stories, and other documentary evidence, John E. Miller fills the gaps in Wilder’s autobiographical novels and describes her sixty-three years of living in Mansfield, Missouri. As a result, the process of personal development that culminated in Wilder’s writing of the novels that secured her reputation as one of America’s most popular children’s authors becomes evident.
 2. On the list April 25, 2015
In Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer’s Life, Pamela Smith Hill delves into the complex and often fascinating relationships Wilder formed throughout her life that led to the writing of her classic Little House series. Using Wilder’s stories, personal correspondence, an unpublished autobiography, and experiences in South Dakota, Hill has produced a historical-literary biography of the famous and much-loved author. Following the course of Wilder’s life, and her real family’s journey west, Hill provides a context, both familial and literary, for Wilder’s writing career.

Laura Ingalls Wilder examines Wilder’s inspirations as a writer, particularly her tumultuous, but ultimately successful, professional and personal relationship with her daughter—the hidden editor—Rose Wilder Lane. Wilder produced her timeless classics with the help of, but not reliance upon, her daughter’s editorial insights. Over the course of more than thirty years, Lane and Wilder engaged in a dynamic working relationship, shifting between trust, distrust, and respect. Hill argues that they differed in their visions of the path Wilder’s career should follow, but eventually Lane’s editing brought out the best of her mother’s writing, and allowed her creativity, expression, and experiences to shine through
 3. On the list May 16, 2015
Booker T. Washington, the most recognized national leader, orator and educator, emerged from slavery in the deep south, to work for the betterment of African Americans in the post Reconstruction period.

"Up From Slavery" is an autobiography of Booker T. Washington's life and work, which has been the source of inspiration for all Americans. Washington reveals his inner most thoughts as he transitions from ex-slave to teacher and founder of one of the most important schools for African Americans in the south, The Tuskegee Industrial Institute.
 4. On the List May 16, 2015
Before Laura Ingalls Wilder found fame with her Little House books, she made a name for herself with short nonfiction pieces in magazines and newspapers. Read today, these pieces offer insight into her development as a writer and depict farm life in the Ozarks—and also show us a different Laura Ingalls Wilder from the woman we have come to know.

This volume collects essays by Wilder that originally appeared in the Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1924. Building on the initial compilation of these articles under the title Little House in the Ozarks, this revised edition marks a more comprehensive collection by adding forty-two additional Ruralist articles and restoring passages previously omitted from other articles.

Writing as “Mrs. A. J. Wilder” about modern life in the early twentieth-century Ozarks, Laura lends her advice to women of her generation on such timeless issues as how to be an equal partner with their husbands, how to support the new freedoms they’d won with the right to vote, and how to maintain important family values in their changing world. Yet she also discusses such practical matters as how to raise chickens, save time on household tasks, and set aside time to relax now and then.

New articles in this edition include “Making the Best of Things,” “Economy in Egg Production,” and “Spic, Span, and Beauty.” “Magic in Plain Foods” reflects her cosmopolitanism and willingness to take advantage of new technologies, while “San Marino Is Small but Mighty” reveals her social-political philosophy and her interest in cooperation and community as well as in individualism and freedom. Mrs. Wilder was firmly committed to living in the present while finding much strength in the values of her past.

A substantial introduction by Stephen W. Hines places the essays in their biographical and historical context, showing how these pieces present Wilder’s unique perspective on life and politics during the World War I era while commenting on the challenges of surviving and thriving in the rustic Ozark hill country. The former little girl from the little house was entering a new world and wrestling with such issues as motor cars and new “labor-saving” devices, but she still knew how to build a model small farm and how to get the most out of a dollar.

Together, these essays lend more insight into Wilder than do even her novels and show that, while technology may have improved since she wrote them, the key to the good life hasn’t changed much in almost a century. Laura Ingalls Wilder, Farm Journalist distills the essence of her pioneer heritage and will delight fans of her later work as it sheds new light on a vanished era
 5. On the list May 27, 2015
When Confederate men marched off to battle, southern women struggled with the new responsibilities of directing farms and plantations, providing for families, and supervising increasingly restive slaves. Drew Faust offers a compelling picture of the more than half-million women who belonged to the slaveholding families of the Confederacy during this period of acute crisis, when every part of these women's lives became vexed and uncertain.
 6. On the list August 29, 2015
Kelly Kathleen Ferguson needed to know-was connecting with her lifelong heroine the key to knowing herself? She decided to find out. Kelly donned a prairie dress and retraced the pioneer journey of Laura Ingalls Wilder. From Wisconsin to Minnesota, South Dakota to Missouri, she explored Laura's past and her own. Part travelogue, part memoir and part social commentary, My Life as Laura shows how a relationship with a pioneer girl who lived in little houses long ago can give a sense of purpose for today. Judy Blunt, author of the national best seller Breaking Clean, says My Life as Laura is "Hilarious, perceptive and true, a homespun story as genuine as the ones that inspired it."
 7. On the list September 9, 2015
Many books have been written about Joseph Smith. This one the product of Truman Madsen's deep love for the subject and years of research illuminates specific facets of Joseph Smith s greatness. The topics discussed include Joseph Smith's First Vision; his personality and character (including perspectives on his family life); his spiritual gifts and attributes; his varied trials; his Kirtland Temple experience; doctrinal developments in the Nauvoo era; and the last months and martyrdom. The book is filled with fascinating detail about key events in the Prophet's life and his impact on people. The result is a vivid, riveting portrayal of this remarkable prophet. Those who knew Joseph Smith best testified that he lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people. This wonderful book by a beloved scholar will serve to confirm and strengthen that conviction for Latter-day Saints today
 8. On the list September 19, 2015
"Brigham Young was the supreme American paradox, not because he contained elements foreign to American soil but because he united them--the business genius of a Rockefeller with the spiritual sensitivities of an Emerson, the lusty enjoyments of the pleasures of good living with the tenderness of a Florence Nightingale. He was not merely an entrepreneur with a shared vision of America as the Promised Land; he was a prophet with visions of his own and he built beyond himself."
 9. On the list September 19, 2015
Jane Addams (1860-1935) was a leading statesperson in an era when few imagined such possibilities for women. In this fresh interpretation, the first full biography of Addams in nearly forty years, Louise W. Knight shows Addams's boldness, creativity, and tenacity as she sought ways to put the ideals of democracy into action. Starting in Chicago as a co-founder of the nation's first settlement house, Hull House—a community center where people of all classes and ethnicities could gather—Addams became a grassroots organizer and a partner of trade unionists, women, immigrants, and African Americans seeking social justice. In time she emerged as a progressive political force; an advocate for women's suffrage; an advisor to presidents; a co-founder of civil rights organizations, including the NAACP; and a leader for international peace. Written as a fast-paced narrative, Jane Addams traces how one woman worked with others to make a difference in the world. 32 black-and-white illustrations
10. On the list November 30, 2015
Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. This book is a detective mystery story that takes place in the UK. There are a lot of characters in this story and can be hard to keep in your mind. Some characters only show up for a little while and could have been left out of the story.
Matthew is the main detective on the case of murder man found on the beach. The murdered man is not well liked. He is an unknown in the area and really hasn't been around for long but long enough to get himself killed.
Matthew and his team are trying to figure who he is and why he was murdered. The clues lead them all over the little town and makes Matthew go to people he hasn't seen for awhile.
I am trying to be very careful about what I say because this is mystery and I don't want to spoil anything.
You really need to go into this book with out much knowledge. This book does hold your interest and you will question somethings.
The murder victim is Simon Waldon. Who is he and why is he in North Devon?
I gave this book 4 stars and highly recommend that you read it.

Top Ten Tuesday

Since 4/13/15
I am tryin something new for this blog. This new series will be done every Tuesday if possible. My first topic is oldest books that I own on my TBR that I haven't read yet.. I am going off my good reads list so these might be even older than that. I put them in order and will include what the dust cover says about the book. I don't remember what the books are about so this is the best way to describe them. So onto the books.
The celebrated Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of America. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one-volume life, he carries the reader through Washington's troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian Wars, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

Despite the reverence his name inspires Washington remains a waxwork to many readers, worthy but dull, a laconic man of remarkable self-control. But in this groundbreaking work Chernow revises forever the uninspiring stereotype. He portrays Washington as a strapping, celebrated horseman, elegant dancer and tireless hunter, who guarded his emotional life with intriguing ferocity. Not only did Washington gather around himself the foremost figures of the age, including James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, he orchestrated their actions to help realise his vision for the new federal government, define the separation of powers, and establish the office of the presidency.

Ron Chernow takes us on a page-turning journey through all the formative events of America's founding. This is a magisterial work from one of America's foremost writers and historians.
Since 4/13/15
This is the second book in a series so before I can read this I have to get the first book and then of course the last book. I can get the boxset from amazon for fairly cheap.
In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation's history, two armies fought for two dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Shattered futures, forgotten innocence, and crippled beauty were also the casualties of war. The Killer Angels is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—a dramatic re-creation of the battleground for America's destiny
Since 4/19/15
This is the first book in a series.
The five children find a cantankerous sand fairy, a psammead, in a gravel pit. Every day 'It' will grant each of them a wish that lasts until sunset, often with disastrous consequences.

It's first the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women—of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth, who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of CafĂ© Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.
Since 6/2/15
When Achilles Conroy and his brother Troy return from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, their white mother presents them with the key to their past: envelopes containing details about their respective birth parents. After Troy disappears, Achilles—always his brother’s keeper—embarks on a harrowing journey in search of Troy, an experience that will change him forever.

Heartbreaking, intimate, and at times disturbing, Hold It ’Til It Hurts is a modern-day odyssey through war, adventure, disaster, and love, and explores how people who do not define themselves by race make sense of a world that does.
Since 7/18/15
To the Rescue is the much-anticipated official biography of President Thomas S. Monson. Beginning with President Monson's family heritage and his early years in Salt Lake City, it included his vocational preparation and his career in the world of journalism. More important, this inspiring book recounts his lifetime of Church service. Called as a bishop at the age of twenty-two, as a mission president at thirty-one, and as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve at age thirty-six, he has traveled the globe to minister to the Saints for more than fifty years. This book shares many of his personal experience, from his visits behind the Iron Curtain to his contributions on the Scriptures Publication Committee and in the missionary and welfare areas; it also provides up-to-the-minute information about his work as Church President.

Filled with wonderful photographs and little-known accounts, this biography is a portrait of a leader who ministers both to the one and to the many, and who is completely dedicated to doing whatever the Lord prompts him to do.
Since 7/22/15
Amidst confusion over several versions of this mother's account of her son, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, his 5th great grandson for the family foundation reaffirms this version developed in 1996 by Scot & Maurine Proctor, "who restored Lucy's language and feeling through verification with the original notebook."
Since 7/22/15
1925. Brigham Young, second President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, and first Governor of Utah, was the founder and chief builder of the Great Intermountain West of the United States of America. He is recognized as one of the foremost colonizers and empire builders of all time. In this book Young is allowed to speak for himself. Excerpts have been made from his many discourses, and these have been arranged to show the coherent system of faith which he continuously taught his people and by which he was enabled to win success for his followers. Partial Contents: The Godhead; The Communication Between God and Man; Pre-existence, the Plan of Salvation; Free Agency; The Power of Evil; The Law of Eternal Progression; The Destiny of Man; Dispensations of the Gospel; The Last Days; The Scriptures; The Priesthood; The First Principles of the Gospel; The Word of Wisdom; The Family; Some Womanly Duties; Obedience; Gratitude, Humility, Devotion, Liberality, Honesty; Happiness and Social Enjoyments; Education; Self Control; Our Fellow-Men; Unity and Cooperation; Thrift and Industry; Wealth; Missionary Work; Visions, Mysteries and Miracles; Trials and Persecution; Political Government; Death and Resurrection; The Spirit World; Eternal Judgment; Salvation; Temples and Salvation for the Dead; Man's Search for Truth and Salvation; Testimony of the Truth; The Church and Kingdom of God on Earth; Some Effects of the Gospel; Joseph Smith the Prophet; and The Settlement in the West.

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?
Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

I do plan on getting these read within the next couple of years. I will keep you updated on my progress.
Until next time keep reading.

Books Beside My Chair #4

This is the week of January 20th through January 26th. I read six books totaling 2,249. This brings my total books read for 2020 to 18 books. This is the first book I finished for the week and my favorite. I gave it 5 stars. It is a sci-fi book and was really good. It is about a girl who is being raised by her Dad because her mom went on mission just after she was born and will never return. It is found in the young adult section.
This book I already told you about. I read it for the 1,000 pages readathon. I gave it 4 stars. It was really good but I did like her other book better. That book is called The Hating Game. I also read this for the romanceopoly game.
I also read this for the 1,000 pages readathon. I ended up really enjoying this book. I got to read it for free using my Amazon Prime. Now I have to wait to read the sequel because I can only read one book a month in this program. I like that it has a Native American as the main character and tlks about the environment.
This book was ok. I gave it 3 stars. It is the last book in the Red Queen series. It is a Young Adult Fantasy.
This book took me no longer to read than planned. Nothing wrong with book because I did enjoy it and gave it 4 stars. It just got put to the side for other books. This is a detective mystery story. I will have a review up later this week. I received this book through Net Galley for a honest review.
I just love Katie O'Neill's graphic Novels. She does it again with this one. I do have to admit I do like the first one better but I still gave this one 4 stars. I read this book for the 1,000 page readathon. The art style is great and beautiful.

That is what I read last week and I really had a great time with all that I read and until next time keep reading.

Birthday Book Haul

January is my birthday month. For my birthday Mike let me go to the book store.  These are the books I bought except for one which my parents sent to me. I will do that one first.
The World Of Laura Ingalls Wilder By: Marta McDowell For those of you who know me you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder is my all time favorite books and author. I grew up reading her books every year and watching the TV series over and over again. I have been collecting books by her or about her. This also includes her family. I have been to her house in Missouri twice and the one in Kansas once. I still have several more to visit and be sure I will get to those one day. This book has beautiful pictures and I can't wait to read it. Thank you Mom and Dad
Now onto the books that I bought at Barnes and Noble. I happen to be lucky and most of the books were marked down to 50% off as you can see in the picture. I will be giving you the details from the book it self since I haven't read them.

Anna's quest to save the kingdom will lead her to myths and wonders beyond compare and require bravery, honesty, and, above all else, love.

With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency novel titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it'll take a lot more then flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.
Legacy And The Queen By: Annie Matthew This is another middle grade book. Tennis means everything in the Republic of Nova. Too poor to afford formal training, twelve-year-old Legacy practices serves and returns against the wall of her father's orphanage to pass the time. But all that is about to change. Silla "the Queen," announces her annual tournament where citizens battle for her favor and a cash prize big enough to save Legacy's family's orphanage-and Legacy has her heart set on winning both. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?
Lethal White By: Robert Galbraith Fourth book in series. "I seen a kid killed...He strangled it, up by the horse." When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally  distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott-once his assistant, now a partner in the agency-set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been-Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much, trickier than that.

I am hoping to get to all of these books this year but probably not since I have a huge collection of books that need to be read.
Until next time keep reading.

The Thousand Pages Readathon TBR

I have decided to join this readathon because I usually can read a thousand pages in a week. This readathon is actually two weeks long. It goes from January 20th to February 2nd. I will probably finish all my pages this week. The challenges are really simple even for there being 7 of them. Here are the challenges. 1. Post your TBR 2. Start a book. 3. Read 500 pages. 4. Complete a reading sprint ( this one I probably won't get done). 5. Post a picture of your reading space. ( This is going to be done when I post this because my reading area is this blogs header). 6. Finish a book. 7. Read 1,000 pages. See what I mean really simple. I will be cheating a little with two graphic novels. This will break up my 2 books that are over 300 pages. My total page count will be 1041 pages when thy are all read. Now onto the books. 99 Percent Mine By: Sally Thorne is about Darcy Barrett and Tom Valeska. Here is what the back of the book says. Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She's traveled the world and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Jamie, Darcy's twin brother, saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy's best efforts, Tom's off limits and loyal to brother, 99 percent. That's the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty-eve since, she's had to learn to settle for good enough. Mera tidebreaker By: Danielle Paige This origin story for Mera and Aquaman that explores Mera's first steps on land, as well as her first steps as a hero or villain, forcing her to choose to follow her heart or her mission to kill. Ans astonishing story that explores duty, love, heroism, and freedom, all through the eyes of readers' favorite undersea royalty.  The Tea Dragon Festival By: Katie O'Neill. This is the second book in the Tea Dragon Society Series. This is a cute graphic novel and every one should read it. Rinn has grown up with the Tea Dragons that inhabit their village, but stumbling across a real dragon turns out to be a different matter entirely! Aedhan is a young dragon who was appointed to protect the village, but fell asleep in the forest eighty years ago. With the aid of inn's adventuring uncle Erik and his partner Hesekiel, they investigate the mystery of his enchanted sleep...but Rinn's real challenge is to help Aedhan come to terms with feeling that he cannot get back the time he has lost.
This book is about Native American lady and a tycoon's son.
Raised to rule, bred to lead and weaned on a diet of ruthless ambition. In a world of haves and have nots, my family has it all, and I want nothing to do with it.
My path takes me far from home and paints me as the black sheep. At odds with my father, I'm determined to build my own empire. I have rules, but Lennix Hunter is the exception to every one of them. From the moment we meet, something sparks between us. But my family stole from hers and my father is the man she hates most. I lied to have her, and would do anything to keep her. Though she tries to hate me, too, the inexorable pull between us will not be denied.
And neither will I.
Yes this is another romance book and I am already reading it. It is good so far. I just want to finish all my romance books on my shelves.
That is my TBR for this readathon. Our going to join in, there is still time to do this.
Until next time keep reading.
